about
I wrote this song in 2017 after Hurricane Harvey. It was a confusing time, as I was separate from my friends and family who were dealing with such a deadly and difficult situation. As the flooding continued and devastation continued in Houston, I watched Harvey from a LES Bar rain gently down on NYC. The cognitive dissonance became these lyrics.
Cleaning up after that Storm, so many had to clean out closets, throw out junk that accumulated and then got destroyed in the flooding. That was the perfect metaphor for facing, healing and letting go of the trauma's hidden in our family closets. This song is dedicated to that important healing process, but I use a minor blues to express the heaviness of such deep, spiritual work.
It reflects my optimistism in using even challenging situations to become a better person, to create a better world.
On another level, I sang my hopes that we'd rebuild a smarter, safer H-Town. In regards to flooding and storms, they will surely come again to my swampy hometown. But 5 years later, I am still saddened by the overdevelopment, over use of concrete; which is surely driven by $ motives. Just as I'm disturbed at the skism between green environmental rhetoric, and wiser choices at the macro level. Certainly, war and mask trash are TERRIBLE for the environment.
When will we learn that nothing is more important than creating loving families, and safe homes to raise them on a clean, healthy earth? Doesn't matter if we heal our traumas, only to be re-traumatized, generation after generation?
So today I'm singing the blues as I continue the work of healing my traumas, whilst feeling totally depressed at the state of the world.
lyrics
Trauma Storm, just pissing blame
A fall guy, a set up game
All we see is what's gone before
Banging our heads against that locked Door
The roots of our family tree, got flooded in toxicity
And the curfew was passed, with out a hitch, in the aftermath
And what floated to the surface was all the pain we tried to mask
We won't stand alone anymore, We're holding up each other
Cause even the worst of us, is still our sister and our brother
We won't make the same mistake, cause money will never replace
What love has made, what love has made
And those receding waters sure put us in our place
